Whole-Home Battery Backup Just Got Simpler
A Small Device Behind Your Meter Can Replace Major Electrical Work
One of the biggest hurdles to whole-home battery backup has never been the battery itself. It has been the electrical work needed to connect it. Now a small device that fits behind your electric meter is making that job much simpler, and all three of California's major utilities have approved it. Enphase Energy announced in September 2026 that its IQ Meter Collar has been approved by 80 utilities serving more than 38 million customers across the U.S. and Canada, including Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric, and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

What the Meter Collar is, in simple terms
Picture your electric meter, the round device on the outside of your home where utility power enters. The Meter Collar is a ring-shaped device that fits between the meter and the socket it plugs into. During normal operation, power flows as usual. When the grid goes down, the collar safely disconnects your home from the utility lines and lets your battery and solar system power the house. When grid power returns, it reconnects. Enphase describes it as a microgrid interconnection device, meaning it lets your home act as its own small power grid during an outage.

What it replaces
Traditionally, whole-home or partial-home backup often meant moving circuits into a separate backup sub-panel and adding extra equipment on the wall. That work takes time, takes space, and adds cost. The Meter Collar can eliminate much of that, with installers saying it significantly simplifies installation, reduces equipment on the wall, and lets them complete more installations in a single day.

Why it matters for California homeowners
With approval from SCE, SDG&E, and PG&E, more California homeowners can get whole-home backup with a cleaner, faster installation. That matters in a state where public safety power shutoffs, wildfire-related outages, and heat-wave emergencies are a regular concern. Whole-home backup means more than keeping a few circuits on. Depending on system size, it can power the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, medical devices, and more throughout the house. And every day the grid is up, the battery still stores solar energy for the evening hours when time-of-use rates are highest.

Getting whole-home backup without buying equipment
Through third-party ownership programs, qualifying homeowners can get solar and battery storage installed without buying or financing equipment, while enjoying lower energy costs and backup power. Equipment options vary by provider and home, so a system review can show which backup setup fits your house. Installation barriers are dropping, and whole-home backup is more practical than ever. If you have been waiting for the right time, see whether your home qualifies.
